On Tuesday, the Pomona College Judicial Council (JBoard) held a formal presentation about the judicial process following Pomona College President G. Gabrielle Starr’s decision to invoke the Extraordinary Authority of the President and suspend 12 students without judicial processes due to their alleged involvement in the Oct. 7 occupation of Carnegie Hall. On Oct. 23, Starr announced the suspension of 10 students. Since then, two more students have also been issued full academic-year suspensions.

At 10:07 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, over 400 5C students participated in a demonstration for Pomona College to divest from companies and manufacturers supporting the Israeli government. A group of protestors eventually moved to occupy Carnegie Hall, resulting in the building being closed and suffering extensive damage and vandalism. The day of the walkout marked the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ targeted attack in Southern Israel, where 1,200 Israeli people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.

On Sept. 12, Pomona College’s Asian Studies Department hosted a lecture titled “Animals, Race, and the ‘Gospel of Kindness’: The American Whaling Fleet of the Pacific World.” The lecture, the first in a series led by the department’s alumni, shed light on how race relations aboard mixed-race whaling ships impacted sailors’ treatment of whales during the 19th century. Lissa Wadewitz PO ’95, a history professor at the University of Oregon, led the talk.
