On a day of celebration Saturday for the University of Northern Colorado softball team, what a perfect moment for Katie Walling to hit a series-ending, walk-off home run. Walling, a junior infielder and transfer, hit a 2-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 to complete a Big Sky Conference sweep of Portland State at Rodriguez Field in Greeley. The teams were scheduled for a 3-game series Friday and Saturday.

Northern Colorado jumper Kiana Van Haaren set a school record in winning the long jump Friday, and hurdler Jerome Campbell turned in a season-best time with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles at the outdoor track and field Oregon Open in Eugene, Oregon. Van Haaren, a junior from Texas, jumped 20-feet, 5 3/4 inches (6.24 meters) to better the 10-year-old UNC record of 20-5 1/4 set by Alisha Allen. Van Haaren’s jump ranks 23rd in the NCAA this season.

No injuries were reported after a vehicle with five people drove into the lake at Sanborn Park late Friday morning. The driver was arrested for potential impairment, Greeley Police Department public information officer Kristen Duus said. Four passengers were in the car, and all five individuals got out on their own.

Inclement weather, precipitation and colder temperatures Friday, has altered the University of Northern Colorado’s final Big Sky Conference home series of the regular season this weekend. The Bears, 3-6 in the Big Sky Conference and 12-27 overall, will host Portland State for a doubleheader on Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley. The games are scheduled to start at noon and 2:30 p.m., respectively. The UNC program will retire Lou Piel’s jersey before the first game.
