Greeley Tribune
Nathan C. Meeker, who wrote about agriculture for Horace Greeley at the New York Tribune, started the Greeley Tribune in 1870. The inaugural issue hit the stands on November 16, 1870. Initially, the Tribune was a weekly newspaper until 1908, when it transitioned to a daily publication. In 1913, the Tribune expanded by acquiring two additional daily newspapers in Greeley.

An estimated 80,000 people died from overdoses last year, according to provisional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data released Wednesday. That’s down 27% from the 110,000 in 2023. The CDC has been collecting comparable data for 45 years.

Twenty-four University of Northern Colorado track and field athletes will compete at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships this week in Sacramento, California. Sacramento State will host the meet Wednesday-Saturday at Hornet Stadium. All four days will be streamed on ESPN+. The Northern Arizona women’s team has won four consecutive titles. Montana State is the defending men’s champion.

Aims Community College will honor its spring graduates this week with 508 students participating in ceremonies in Greeley. The college will celebrate its graduates during ceremonies at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday at the Welcome Center Auditorium in Greeley. The University of Northern Colorado hosted its graduation weekend May 9-10.

Nya Chacon, a graduate student and outfielder on the University of Northern Colorado softball team, was one of two Bears players named to the Big Sky Conference All-Tournament Team, the league announced over the weekend. Chacon, a center fielder who played scholastic softball at Mountain View High in Loveland, joined senior catcher Sabrina Javorsky on the 11-player team. UNC hosted the conference tournament this past Tuesday-Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley.
