Plans to improve a Welsh castle have been lodged with the council. Proposals to improve the drainage at Merthyr Tydfil's Cyfarthfa Park and at the castle have been submitted as part of a move to protect the building with a new below-ground level drainage network being planned for the site.

A road project, a walking and cycling route and the creation of safe routes to schools are among the schemes in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) and Merthyr Tydfil that will get their share of nearly £50m worth of Welsh Government transport grants in the next year. The Welsh Government confirmed in an announcement on Friday, April 11 that they would be allocating £47 million towards local authorities in the next financial year to improve transport across south east Wales.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is set to move to a flood response system that does not just rely on Met Office warnings. As part of recommendations approved by cabinet on Wednesday, April 9, the council will move away from the current “yellow, amber and red” with a new standby protocol that does not just rely on Met Office warnings but also uses other data such as flood forecasting models and the predicted rainfall forecasts.

An “absolutely fabulous” business in Merthyr Tydfil town centre has had to close its doors because of the costs it faces. Paula’s Boutique, in Newmarket Walk, was a popular women’s clothing store run by Paula Owen who said the cost of rent was a reason for the closure and said that they had asked the council for help without success. They had also previously raised concerns about the lift and elevator in St Tydfil’s shopping centre not working for years and the impact this was having on trade.
