The Republic of Singapore Navy’s future MRCV, which is set to become the first surface combatant ship designed as a drone mothership, is based on a fusion of designs from Sweden and Denmark. Designs from Saab Kockums and Denmark’s Odense Maritime Technology (OMT) were initially two separate entrants into the MRCV program.

Through the initial phase of the program, Austal will build 18 Landing Craft Medium (LC-M) for the Australian Army at its facility in Henderson, Western Australia. The vessels – which will equip three new littoral lift groups that will be stood up in Northern Australia – will replace the Army’s fleet of Landing Craft Mechanised Mark 8 (LCM8). Austal and Birdon were initially selected to build the vessels in November 2023, however, the project has only now been formally approved.

The two craft, which will start construction next month in Yamba, south of Brisbane, will equip the RAN’s Pacific Support Vessel ADV Reliant from next year. Reliant is formally based at HMAS Moreton in Brisbane, Queensland and regularly deploys to the South Pacific for regional presence, logistics support, and transport missions. In 2023, its combined crew of commercial seafarers from Teekay Shipping, as well as Australian Army and RAN personnel spent more than 200 days deployed to the region.
