Amanda Compton, 44, was hunting deer with her friend, Nicholas Orr, on Admiralty Island, one of the most bear-dense areas in North America. But the routine trip took a frightening turn when they suddenly found themselves face-to-face with a mother brown bear protecting her cub.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Rachel Mason first came to Alaska in 1981. She said that adventure landed her in Kodiak where she thought she was going to work at a cannery and learn about the fishing industry. Mason ended up driving a cab there for six years, but she said it turned out to be good training for becoming an anthropologist, which she now is with the National Park Service.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - “Sivulliq Ancestor” is an Inupiaq story that is told from 1890′s Arctic Alaska after smallpox devastated Indigenous communities. “But at the core of the story is courage and sacrifice, traditional knowledge of the land — ancient knowledge — and essentially a mother’s love for her children,” says author Lily Tuzroyluke. It is a love she can relate to. As a mom herself, Tuzroyluke’s son Luke was diagnosed with autism when he was five years old.
