Two people died in a helicopter crash on the North Slope Wednesday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The agency was notified of a missing helicopter earlier in the afternoon and found wreckage from a crash roughly 30 miles west of Deadhorse, said Alaska NTSB chief Clint Johnson. Responders with the North Slope Borough Search and Rescue were on the scene Wednesday. The National Transportation Safety Board was planning to launch a team from Anchorage as well, Johnson said.

Bad weather has halted a search for a 41-year-old mountaineer who remains missing after falling Monday off the West Buttress of Denali. National Park Service spokesperson Amber Smigiel said a ground search was called off Tuesday after heavy winds and snow set in on the mountain, recently renamed Mount McKinley by President Trump. She said rangers are monitoring conditions every hour in hopes the weather will break so they can restart the search.

Heat pumps can use earth’s warmth to help lower home and business heating costs. But volcanoes offer a much larger potential for generating power. Advocates say it could also be used for aiding food production in remote locations, creating cleaner fuel and possibly power remote data centers.

Anchorage police and municipal workers are set to clear out two of the city’s largest homeless camps next month, as notices went up Friday in Mountain View’s Davis Park and the nearby snow dump. That’s under a mandate from Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, who says the camps have negatively affected the wellbeing of the surrounding neighborhood, reduced residents’ access to public spaces and increased risk for the nearby military base.
