On Tuesday, President Joe Biden sent the House of Representatives a communication regarding Cuba. The message, titled “Certification of Rescission of Cuba’s Designation asa State Sponsor of Terrorism,” was meant to inform Congress of the president’s decision to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. As predicted, Venezuela was in U.S. news in a very big way on Friday. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was sworn in as president for the next six years after a tumultuous six months since Venezuela’s elections in July. While many are sticking to the narrative that suggests Edmundo González Urrutia won the election based on the data provided by Maria Corina Machado’s opposition party, there is no denying that the data is at best, suspicious.

President-elect Donald Trump is holding a pre-inauguration rally in Washington DC on January 19, the day before his inauguration. Many are wondering whether this rally, like the one just before the attack on the Capitol which happened four years ago, is cause for concern. From what I’m gleaning from social media posts across various smaller market platforms, I would say that it is worrisome, but not for the reasons you’re thinking.

It’s not unheard of for the United States to get involved in other countries' elections to swing them in a way that serves U.S. corporate interests. The election in Venezuela over the summer appears to be another one of these cases. While much was made about the publicly available data presented by María Corina Machado’s opposition, the group failed to prove anything. On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on mass deportations that was nothing short of a chaotic mess and Republican grandstanding built around the idea that most Latin American and Caribbean Island immigrants in the U.S. are in the country illegally. While the focus was on immigrants who commit crimes, for Republicans, what was apparent was that any migrant who crossed the southern border to seek asylum was a criminal by default.
