An in-depth look at the issues surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals for the world. I was born and raised in the city of Indore in the central part of India. We lived in a three-story apartment complex, right in the heart of city, on the main street. We had hot and dry summers. Afternoon temperatures soared past 100°F for 50 to 60 days, and over 110°F for at least a few days.

Last month, I bicycled along the east rim of Crater Lake with two good friends of mine. You might ask what’s so special about this bicycle ride? On two Saturdays in early September, the Crater Lake National Park in Oregon (USA) closes down the East Rim Drive for automobile traffic. Only bicycles and walkers are allowed to enjoy this beautiful mountainous landscape overlooking the incredibly beautiful natural, 2,000 ft.

While observing the 50th anniversary of the Chipko movement for saving forests many inspiring stories were related but we did not hear much about the highly inspiring Appiko movement of Karnataka and some other parts of South India. As this writer has visited some of these villages let me try to fill in this gap here, even though some time has passed since my two visits to these villages.

100+ environmental and human rights organisations and 400+ individuals issue a letter to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change demanding the roll back of the Green Credit Rules 2023 and the methodology introduced under the Notification dated 22nd February 2024, which in effect provides incentive for forest diversion activities through green credit earnings, at huge cost to the environment, forest and climate and to the rights of forest dwelling communities.

The destruction of nature might one day become a criminal offense adjudicated by the International Criminal Court. On December 3, 2019, the Pacific island state of Vanuatu made an audacious proposal: Make ecocide—the destruction of nature—an international crime. “An amendment of the Rome Statute could criminalize acts that amount to Ecocide,” stated Ambassador of Vanuatu John Licht at the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) annual Assembly of States Parties in the Hague.

An anonymous ‘they’ are accused of damaging our pretty blue planet, but we know for certain it is not ‘they’. It is ‘Us’. ‘We’. It’s we who are ravaging and plundering our Earth. ‘We’ are like a virus pandemic that devastates the environment, it is overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels and by deforestation that have caused climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water.
