Human development focuses on improving the lives people lead rather than assuming that economic growth will lead, automatically, to greater wellbeing for all. Income growth is seen as a means to development, rather than an end in itself.

We lived in a three-story apartment complex, right in the heart of city, on the main street. We had hot and dry summers. Afternoon temperatures soared past 100°F for 50 to 60 days, and over 110°F for at least a few days.

Last month, I bicycled along the east rim of Crater Lake with two good friends of mine. You might ask what’s so special about this bicycle ride? On two Saturdays in early September, the Crater Lake National Park in Oregon (USA) closes down the East Rim Drive for automobile traffic. Only bicycles and walkers are allowed to enjoy this beautiful mountainous landscape overlooking the incredibly beautiful natural, 2,000 ft.
