The rugged mountain ranges of the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park loom large over Shane Wells's western Victorian property. From the foot of his dam, Mr Wells can normally watch the sunrise just beyond the mountain ranges. But checking the pumps on his farm dam in the early morning light this weekend, Mr Wells noticed a change. "Usually you can see all the mountains with the sun coming up," Mr Wells said.

A resprayed Holden Commodore has been seized as police continue to hunt for the driver who critically injured a child in a hit-and-run on the New South Wales–Victorian border. It is understood the car was spotted being towed on a car trailer across the border from Albury into Wodonga on Saturday before being taken to a business. The car is believed to have been fitted with fake Victorian registration plates and had damage to the front passenger side.

A man has fronted court on a fresh charge of negligent manslaughter over the death of 49-year-old Emma Bates in northern Victoria. John Torney, 40, appeared via video link in Shepparton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, after being charged by detectives from the Cobram Crime Investigation Unit last Friday. Ms Bates was found dead after emergency services were called to her home in Campbell Road at Cobram in April this year.

Specialist crews have discovered a "giant hole" after peeling back a section of the Great Alpine Road in Victoria's Alps. A cyclist alerted emergency services on Saturday morning to a sinkhole on the road, which links the state's north-east to Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain. It was immediately closed off in both directions. Andrew Crook from the Department of Transport and Planning said a "huge amount of work" was being done at the site following the discovery.

The Great Alpine Road in Victoria's high country has been closed in both directions after being damaged by a sinkhole. The sinkhole emerged at Jackass Gully between Harrietville and Hotham Heights about 7am on Saturday. Mount Hotham Chamber of Commerce president Steve Belli said he expected the closure to be in place for some time. "It looks like a collapsed mine shaft, but that's [not yet] confirmed," Mr Belli said.

American inventor Thomas Edison described the linotype machine as the eighth wonder of the world when it was introduced in 1886. The technology revolutionised typesetting to make printing more efficient by creating a line of type at once, rapidly increasing newspaper circulation. Today, the linotype makes up many pieces of equipment still in working order on display at the Federal Standard Printing Works in the small historic town of Chiltern in north-east Victoria.
