    A four-year saga appears to be coming to a close, and Lake Tahoe is emerging as the ultimate victor. After finalizing a settlement, AT&T is removing the inactive lead telecommunication cables from “The Jewel of the Sierras.” By the end of this month, thanks to an agreement reached between California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA) and AT&T, the decommissioned communications cables will be removed. Their hired contractors have begun this important work and have made notable progress.

    On July 19, North Tahoe Public Utility District estimated that 125,000 gallons of untreated sewage were “discharged” from a break in a sewer line, of which only 40,000 gallons were recovered. An estimated 85,000 gallons of raw sewage seeped into the lake from the shore of Carnelian Bay West Beach. The contaminated water samples have been collected and sent to be tested, but the current levels still need to be determined.
