Vandal strikes Norfolk American Legion

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An American Legion in Norfolk was a victim of vandalism Saturday, as workers came in and found the front glass shattered. Police are now looking for the suspect. Officials with the American Legion said they have at least six surveillance cameras around the building, noting they could see the suspect coming up Tidewater Drive and go around the back of the building, where they tried opening a door before they came around front looking for something to break the glass.

(WAVY) — When Mary Ross and her sister Muriel Geigert decided to go to Rome for Thanksgiving, they left with high hopes. “When we sped off, we thought, ‘I hope the Pope’s in town, I hope that we can see him,'” Ross said. The day before Thanksgiving in 2023, they were in St. Peter’s Square. Geigert had trouble walking that day and a tour guide put her in wheelchair. They were passed off to another guide in the square, and that person took them to a special area for the disabled.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The ex-wife of one of the three people shot and killed in a 2023 Newport News shooting is responding to the arrest of a man now facing three counts of first-degree murder. Police arrested Dimair Jones, 26, and charged him with the murder of three men, including Derek Jones, in Newport News. Dimair Jones is now behind bars and has been denied bond, and Derek Jones’ ex-wife remembered the call she received about the suspect’s arrest.

(WAVY) — Syphilis, a disease with origins stretching back to the 1400s, is surging in Hampton Roads, and it’s enough to catch the eye of the Norfolk Department of Health, which is taking steps to spread the word on treatment and prevention. Once a rare disease, syphilis is now becoming more common in our area of the Commonwealth. “In Norfolk, we’re seeing four or five a week that come through the clinic,” said Dr. Susan Girois, director of the Norfolk Health Department.
