    State lawmakers passed over 200 bills on Wednesday. That’s a lot to keep track of, so with the legislative session ending on Friday, HPR is narrowing it down to the important bills we’ve been tracking. All measures passed by lawmakers will next go to Gov. Josh Green for his signature. If he decides to veto a bill, lawmakers can override it with a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers.

    While lawmakers are considering many bills ahead of the end of the 2025 session on Friday, here at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, we’ve narrowed down the topics to the top four we’re paying close attention to. All of these measures have made it through the conference committee, one of the last steps of the legislative process, and many will be voted on for a final time by both the House and Senate on Wednesday.

    Over 45 federally funded projects totaling nearly $30 million at the University of Hawaiʻi have been frozen or terminated, or received stop work orders as of April 15, according to documents obtained by Hawaiʻi Public Radio. These programs span the fields of medicine, climate science, agriculture, and education — and the cuts are still growing. By Monday, University of Hawaiʻi President Wendy Hensel announced that the cuts had increased to $36 million, and the affected projects to at least 48.
