I recently received a report stating that 33% of Iowans younger than 25 reported they would be willing to clock 60-hour work weeks to climb the career ladder. If you are curious, the national average from the same report was stated at 61%. Hmmm. Another way to look at this finding is that two out of three young Iowans are not willing to work 60-hour weeks. Regardless, saying you will work 60 hours per week is one thing; doing it is quite another. And that doesn’t just go for young people.

New manual of style, in French. Grands Jours de Bourgogne, a famous week-long trade fair held every two years to highlight that famous French wine region, asked English-speaking writers to use that French name rather than the anglicized “Burgundy.” They are sensitive about this because Burgundy translates back into French as “Bordeaux” which is an entirely different thing.

Plain or peanut? It’s a simple question that deserves a simple answer. Either plain… or peanut. When working fundraiser concession stands as a youth, I would ask the plain or peanut question to customers who would order a Snickers bar. The answer was always the same — a pause, a wrinkled brow, and then a very slow and questioning, “…peanut?” This was my slightly warped sense of humor derived from my fascination with words, human behavior and marketing.

When our editor, Tammy Pearson, talked with me about writing a column on organ transplants for our Iowa Living magazines, I told her how I once moved a piano. She didn’t laugh but instead told me how this was a serious and important subject. She was right about that, and I was insensitive with my reply. Like most of you reading this, I have not had to deal with organ failure or the need for organ transplants. I am quite thankful for that.
