Many of us simply couldn’t resist the challenge of those bumpers, buzzers, lights, bells, flippers — and the silver ball.

This century, China’s middle class discovered its mysterious allure, doubling demand and prices. Malaysia supplies much of that demand in China, Thailand and Singapore — the top consumers of durian. Traditionally, Malay durian has been free farmed in remote mountain regions where the trees thrive.
