Comeaux High School will have a new principal in the fall, the latest change for the school this year. Assistant Principal Erin Atkins will serve as the school's new principal. She replaces Catherine Cassidy, who is moving to be the district's director of food services. Atkins will be the school's fifth principal in eight years. She's been in education for nearly two decades and more than 10 years at Comeaux.

A Lafayette first grader is heading to Los Angeles this summer to show off his fundamental braille skills, and hopefully bring home a trophy. Emerson Thom will compete against nine other first and second graders in the 25th Braille Challenge where he'll be tested on his skills such as reading comprehension, spelling and proofreading. "I'm gonna try and do better than everyone else in the challenge," he said.

An interim director has been appointed to lead the public defender's office that oversees Lafayette, Acadia and Vermilion parishes. Maggie Simon LeBlanc will temporarily lead the 15th Judicial District Office of the Public Defender, according to a letter sent yesterday and shared with The Acadiana Advocate. The public defender's office provides legal services and representation for people who cannot afford an attorney.

Former Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope will be spending at least another two months in jail after a hearing to consider revoking his probation was delayed. Pope's probation hearing was delayed by a judge Wednesday until July 21. Pope was arrested March 26 for probation and parole violations. He was incarcerated in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Center until April 9 when he was transferred to the Evangeline Parish Correctional Center.

Bailey's Tandoori Grill was filled with special guests Monday morning - nearly 30 students from Creswell Middle School honoring their good behavior throughout the school year. The fifth and sixth grade students had zero infractions for the year and showed positive behavioral traits inside and outside the classroom, said math and French teacher Ousmane Maiga.
