PORTAGE, MI — Neighbors alerted Portage firefighters to smoke at 5803 Lovers Lane, allowing crews to tackle a structure fire just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24. No one was home at the time of the incident, according to a Portage Fire Marshall press release. Firefighters forced entry into the home and attacked the flames from inside. “Thanks to alert neighbors and the skilled, coordinated work of our crews, the fire was brought under control quickly,” said Battalion Chief Lou Playford.

KALAMAZOO, MI — A police report shows new details of an incident that led to the arrest of a Kalamazoo County commissioner last month. Kalamazoo County Commissioner Tami Rey was arrested for domestic assault by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety around 1 a.m. on May 24. Tensions escalated during a custody exchange between Rey and the father of her baby, according a police reported obtained by Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI — Lane closures will span a 7-mile stretch of M-89 between Allegan and Otsego Monday, June 30, through September. Both directions of traffic will share one lane and alternate via traffic regulators from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, per a Michigan Department of Transportation press release. MDOT is investing $1.3 million to repair and repave the road between 113th Avenue and Jefferson Road. That’s just west of U.S. 131, between Otsego and Allegan.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Part of the U.S. 131 business route near Kalamazoo will close to weekend traffic on Saturday, June 28. The ramp connecting southbound U.S. 131 to the business route will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa. Crews will be installing beams for a new bridge over U.S. 131 during the one-day closure, Schirripa said. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes while work is underway, Schirripa said.
