PORTAGE, MI — Neighbors alerted Portage firefighters to smoke at 5803 Lovers Lane, allowing crews to tackle a structure fire just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24. No one was home at the time of the incident, according to a Portage Fire Marshall press release. Firefighters forced entry into the home and attacked the flames from inside. “Thanks to alert neighbors and the skilled, coordinated work of our crews, the fire was brought under control quickly,” said Battalion Chief Lou Playford.

KALAMAZOO, MI — A police report shows new details of an incident that led to the arrest of a Kalamazoo County commissioner last month. Kalamazoo County Commissioner Tami Rey was arrested for domestic assault by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety around 1 a.m. on May 24. Tensions escalated during a custody exchange between Rey and the father of her baby, according a police reported obtained by Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI — Lane closures will span a 7-mile stretch of M-89 between Allegan and Otsego Monday, June 30, through September. Both directions of traffic will share one lane and alternate via traffic regulators from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, per a Michigan Department of Transportation press release. MDOT is investing $1.3 million to repair and repave the road between 113th Avenue and Jefferson Road. That’s just west of U.S. 131, between Otsego and Allegan.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Part of the U.S. 131 business route near Kalamazoo will close to weekend traffic on Saturday, June 28. The ramp connecting southbound U.S. 131 to the business route will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa. Crews will be installing beams for a new bridge over U.S. 131 during the one-day closure, Schirripa said. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes while work is underway, Schirripa said.

KALAMAZOO, MI — A 32-year-old man with serious stab wounds was found at the corner of Vine and Burdick streets around 3:15 a.m. on Monday, June 23. Police later determined the man was the “primary aggressor” in an altercation, allegedly assaulting four people in a home in the 1000 block of South Rose Street before calling 911, per a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety press release. KALAMAZOO, MI — Don’t worry — city officials say the orange barrels on Westnedge Avenue won’t be up as long as they were in 2024. A half-mile stretch of Westnedge Avenue, between Vine Street and Michigan Avenue, will be repaved this summer in an $860,000 project. Work will begin Monday, June 16, and is expected to wrap up mid-August, per a city press release. Signs and barrels will go up the week of June 9.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Residents at a Kalamazoo County trailer park had little warning before being walloped by an EF2 tornado in May 2024. A wide majority said never heard the sirens. That lack of warning put them in danger, residents say. “We’re in the country,” said Pavilion Estates resident Terri Baldwin. “We can’t hear that. We are most at risk when that happens.”The nearest siren is 2 miles away in Portage — and Pavilion Estates mobile home park falls outside of that siren’s 1.2-mile range.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Kalamazoo’s historic Michigan Avenue Courthouse has sat empty since the end of 2023. Now, local real estate developer PlazaCorp ispitching a project that would turn the 88-year-old building into a hotel. The 127-room boutique hotel will include a restaurant, bar and speakeasy, Trisha Kidd, PlazaCorp director of project management, told the Kalamazoo City Commission. The $50 million investment will preserve the historic landmark’s exterior, Kidd said.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Kalamazoo County is getting a $406,563 payout for a climate control fix at the Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice Center. On Tuesday, June 3, commissioners voted unanimously to amend an agreement with TowerPinkster and accept a $406,563 settlement. Two of the units, which are used to control indoor air temperatures and ventilation, were installed in the wrong place during construction, said county spokesperson Taylor Koopman.
