PORTAGE, MI — A pickup truck crossed the median of the road and careened into a Wendy’s restaurant, ending with the arrest of the driver, police said. At 9:42 p.m. Monday, May 12, police were called to the Wendy’s at 4301 W. Centre Ave. in Portage for a crash. A man driving a westbound 2006 GMC pickup crossed the median, struck the drive-thru and crashed into the building, Portage Public Safety Assistant Chief Matt Wolfe said. The driver fled and ran into a swampy area north of the Wendy’s.

SOUTH HAVEN, MI — The word “lifeguard” was uttered 23 times at the latest South Haven City Council meeting in early May. But when it comes to paying for a new lifeguard program, questions remain. The beaches along Lake Michigan are beginning to attract more visitors as the weather warms up. Inside City Hall on May 5, South Haven City Manager Kate Hosier floated the idea of asking voters to support a tax to fund a new lifeguard program. “Does this council want us to look at a millage?” Hosier said.

CASS COUNTY, MI — A 30-year-old pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on a road in Southwest Michigan and died at the scene, police said. At 4:07 a.m. Sunday, May 11, deputies responded to a car versus pedestrian crash in the 57000 block on Wilbur Hill Road in Lagrange Township, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said. A northbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old Dowagiac man hit a pedestrian in the road, police said. The pedestrian, Dalton Prentice, 30, of Dowagiac, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pizza parlor at 635 N. Their only information came from officials in California, with haunting updates that he’d been victimized in crimes and attacks while living on “Skid Row” in Los Angeles, an area populated by homeless people. KALAMAZOO, MI — A man who once lived in a tent in Kalamazoo is facing prison after pleading guilty to a string of arson fires. George Stanard, 33, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree arson and a count of third degree arson on Friday, May 2. The four additional arson charges (third degree) against him were dismissed, court documents state. He was charged with starting eight fires in Kalamazoo between June 11 and Sept. 4, 2024 at the following locations: 563 Portage St.316 E.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Police arrested a juvenile suspect while investigating a string of vehicle break-ins, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reports. The juvenile was taken into custody Wednesday, May 7, after more than 30 larcenies from vehicles in campus area neighborhoods were reported, KDPS said. Officers responded to reports of suspicious activity in the 1700 block of Lafayette Avenue and at least three juveniles fled on foot, KDPS said.
Death of newborn baby under investigation in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Police are investigating the suspicious death of an infant in Kalamazoo County. Police were called around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, to the 100 block of Henning Street in Comstock Township. MSP troopers responded to a residence for a 2-week-old infant not breathing and without a pulse. Despite lifesaving efforts, the infant was pronounced dead at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Witnesses were interviewed, but no arrests have been made, police said.
