PORTAGE, MI — A pickup truck crossed the median of the road and careened into a Wendy’s restaurant, ending with the arrest of the driver, police said. At 9:42 p.m. Monday, May 12, police were called to the Wendy’s at 4301 W. Centre Ave. in Portage for a crash. A man driving a westbound 2006 GMC pickup crossed the median, struck the drive-thru and crashed into the building, Portage Public Safety Assistant Chief Matt Wolfe said. The driver fled and ran into a swampy area north of the Wendy’s.

SOUTH HAVEN, MI — The word “lifeguard” was uttered 23 times at the latest South Haven City Council meeting in early May. But when it comes to paying for a new lifeguard program, questions remain. The beaches along Lake Michigan are beginning to attract more visitors as the weather warms up. Inside City Hall on May 5, South Haven City Manager Kate Hosier floated the idea of asking voters to support a tax to fund a new lifeguard program. “Does this council want us to look at a millage?” Hosier said.

CASS COUNTY, MI — A 30-year-old pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on a road in Southwest Michigan and died at the scene, police said. At 4:07 a.m. Sunday, May 11, deputies responded to a car versus pedestrian crash in the 57000 block on Wilbur Hill Road in Lagrange Township, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said. A northbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old Dowagiac man hit a pedestrian in the road, police said. The pedestrian, Dalton Prentice, 30, of Dowagiac, was pronounced dead at the scene.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Pizza Katerina said goodbye to customers this weekend, announcing on Facebook it would close its doors after going through the last of its dough balls. The pizza parlor at 635 N. Ninth St. in Oshtemo Township announced Saturday, May 10, it would be Pizza Katerina’s last hours in business. “Today we will be open from 3-8 p.m. or until we make our last 30 dough balls into pizzas,” the company posted.
