    Stepping into Maruwu Seicha feels like discovering a hidden gem in downtown Palo Alto. The soft golden lights and warm wooden accents create a zen-like atmosphere perfect for an after-school treat, a study destination or a late-night snack run. Maruwu Seicha began its soft opening on Oct. 18 at 250 University Ave., with a grand opening planned for December. Walking in, we immediately noticed the combination of the earthy, comforting scent of matcha and roasted tea filling the air.

These four things in a sushi roll before us at Tane Vegan Izakaya resemble a traditional Japanese sushi dish, however, it may come as a surprise that the roll is entirely vegan. While most Japanese restaurants have just a few vegetable-only dishes, the restaurant’s entire menu is based on vegan cuisine. Tane Vegan Izakaya opened its Palo Alto location a few months ago on 461 Emerson St., in downtown.

    When school resumes after Thanksgiving break, students will be sporting secondhand fashion thanks to Palo Alto High School’s Thrift Fair during lunch on Friday outside the library. According to Leilani Chen, sophomore vice president, the fair was organized by the Associated Student Body to provide students with access to sustainable shopping, right on campus.

    Yellow and magenta Diwali dresses, chalk-drawn rangoli on the floor, Henna tattoos and craft tables filled the rooms as Palo Alto held its “Festival of Lights: A Diwali Celebration” on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Park Community Center. The event welcomed people of all ages, bringing the community together to celebrate the holiday. Ruthann Garcia, the Mitchell Park Library Services Manager, said the event was held under Palo Alto’s Celebrating Cultures Initiative.
