New ‘Chicago Stories’ Documentary Celebrates 40 Years of House Music

Chicago has long been known for nurturing diverse music genres and also, infamously, as a place where one of them died. RIP disco. But another musical form — known as house music — rose from its ashes. To mark the 40th anniversary of its invention, a new “Chicago Stories” documentary is celebrating the innovative and catchy dance music that still inspires prominent artists today. Producer Barbara Allen joined “Chicago Tonight: Black Voices” to discuss the documentary.
Chicago Fed Money Museum Debuts Exhibit on Black Baseball History

Baseball is often referred to as America’s pastime, but until recently, the accomplishments of many Black players were not formally recognized by Major League Baseball. In 2020, the United States Mint created a commemorative coin collection to honor the Negro National League on the centennial anniversary of its founding. An exhibit of those coins opened at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Money Museum this month.

The life and legacy of Val Gray Ward, founder of a pioneering Black theater company, was remembered this past weekend. Members of the Chicago arts community gathered for a memorial service to honor Ward, who founded Kuumba Theatre Company. Ward died March 7 at age 91. The company, a leading force for African American theater in Chicago, was founded in 1968 out of a need to build a better environment for the community, said Ward’s son, Babatu Gray.
