To kick off the 2024 Advent season, Saint Mary’s student clubs Belles for Life and Fiat hosted a “Mother Mary Baby Shower” for mothers in need within the South Bend community. Fueled by virgin mimosas and dessert, students attended and built gift baskets for mothers in need. On Monday evening in the O’Laughlin Auditorium, award-winning actress and stage director Phylicia Rashad visited Saint Mary’s as part of the College’s Margaret Hill Visiting Artist series. In addition to participating in a Q&A session led by the department chair for theatre, professor Mark Abram-Copenhaver, Rashad led a theater master class for Saint Mary’s students and met privately with various students and faculty throughout the day.

Yeah, you read the title right. But we’ll get there. My grandma Marilyn Disbro, my mom’s stepmom, passed away on All Souls Day this year. She was in the hospital for a whole week beforehand, and that Saturday morning, my dad called me to come home and say goodbye. She was gone just three hours after I arrived. I imagine God brought her soul straight up to heaven, that she was giving an express pass for leaving on such a night.

The Saint Mary’s Cushwa-Leighton Library hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday afternoon for the grand opening of its brand-new academic repository: an institutional archive meant to collect and preserve digital copies of the college’s scholarly outputs.

On Sept. 19, the Saint Mary’s Cushwa-Leighton Library received a call from one of the sons of Lenore Hennebry Madden '61 who said he had three boxes of donations from his mother to give to the library. According to librarian Jill Hobgood '83, they would’ve never guessed what was in those boxes: stacks of first-edition Charles Dickens’ books, as well as letters, drawings and books from Dickens’ own private collection.

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, in association with the Terra Foundation for American Art, hosted a two-day Indigenous art symposium titled “Indigenizing Museums” last Thursday and Friday. The museum held artist demonstrations on Thursday and three symposium sessions on Friday, each inviting Indigenous artists and curators to comment on the decolonization of art and museums as well as efforts to celebrate Indigenous voices, stories and artwork.

The Center for the Study of Spirituality at Saint Mary’s College hosted a three-day conference over the weekend exploring the legacy of the College’s third president, Sister Madeleva Wolff, for the 60th anniversary of her death. Director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality Dan Horan and current College President Katie Conboy joined a group of professors from Saint Mary’s and other universities to speak about various aspects of Wolff’s life and tenure as president.

Web and Social Media Program Manager Martha Reilly joined the University of Notre Dame staff earlier this spring, marking her return to South Bend for the first time since graduating from Saint Mary’s College in 2018. Her position with Notre Dame allows her to focus on a range of topics of research, such as cancer discovery and space and humanities research. Reilly thinks returning to South Bend is a “natural fit” for the post-graduate chapter of her life.

Last Sunday marked the inauguration of Sister Sharlet Ann Wagner as the next president of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, along with her five-member council. The ceremony was held during the Church of Loretto’s 10:30 a.m. mass. Wagner and her new council were blessed and gifted stained glass panels of trees.
