A diversity of perspectives strengthens our work and challenges us to think critically. However, given the weight of the argument presented in last week’s “Invite Trump to speak at commencement” editorial and the significance of the topic, we believe it is important to clarify that the editorial does not speak for all of us at The Observer.

Sophomore Gerald (Jerry) Vielhauer and junior Sonia Lumley are running unopposed in today’s student body president and vice president election. This is the first instance of a student government ticket running unopposed since 2012, and only the second time in the history of Notre Dame’s student government. In an interview with The Observer, Vielhauer and Lumley expressed their long-held goal to run for the highest political office in student government.

Saint Mary’s students also back Kamala Harris over Donald Trump, a separate poll conducted by The Observer at Saint Mary’s College finds. According to the poll, 64.5% of Saint Mary’s students favor Harris and Tim Walz, compared to 31% for Trump and JD Vance. The results fall outside of the 6.9% margin of error at a 95% confidence interval. The vast majority of respondents are registered to vote — only 7% indicate they are not registered to vote.

The Center for the Study of Spirituality at Saint Mary’s College hosted a three-day conference over the weekend exploring the legacy of the College’s third president, Sister Madeleva Wolff, for the 60th anniversary of her death. Director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality Dan Horan and current College President Katie Conboy joined a group of professors from Saint Mary’s and other universities to speak about various aspects of Wolff’s life and tenure as president.

At least 55 transfer students, mostly women, were put on a waitlist for on-campus housing this summer due to a lack of available space in dorms. Transfer students who did not receive housing were notified on July 19 and given a place on the waitlist, according to an email from director of residential life: housing operations, Dan Rohmiller. Approximately 25 students are still on the waitlist, as of Sept. 6.
