BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WVTM) -- New data from the Jefferson County Department of Health shows drug overdose deaths are down from 2023 to 2024. According to the Department of Health, 165 fewer people died of drug overdoses in 2024 than in 2023. Julie Ray with ROSS Recovery Center believes that the decline in numbers is largely because of Narcan and fentanyl test strips, and over the past few years, these life-saving measures have become more accessible.

The college posted on social media Tuesday evening to ask the community to come together in prayer for Hannah Smith. It said she's currently in critical condition in the Bahamas. Smith's sister Abigail told WVTM 13 she was on a cruise with her best friend Brooklyn Pitre celebrating their college graduations.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources recently rolled out an update to protect shoppers and their snap benefits. Benefits getting hacked has been an ongoing issue for months. Now, effective immediately, shoppers with SNAP benefits can lock and unlock their card when they’re not using it. DHR said this will cut down on those benefits getting hacked. “People need to stop hurting other people when it comes to eating,” Lolita Aikens, who gets SNAP benefits, said.
