Medical Education’s Learning Opportunity When I was studying at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, I helped create an introduction to health policy class for public health and prehealth majors. That class is still taught today, some 25 years later, and I continue to lecture periodically about quality and access, the health care workforce, and other health care policy concerns.

The following narrative and accompanying tables illustrate trends in enrollment, in the types of educational programs, and in the number of doctor of medicine (MD)–granting medical schools in the US over the past 20 years. The data were obtained from the 2023-2024 Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Annual Medical School Questionnaire-Part II. The questionnaire was sent in March 2024 to the 157 LCME-accredited medical schools with students enrolled in at least 1 year of curriculum.
