    Graduate Medical Education, 2023-2024 The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) sponsor and administer the National GME (graduate medical education) Census through GME Track (an internet-based AAMC product). These organizations jointly maintain a database of information on training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and of the residents and fellows enrolled in the programs.

    The following narrative and accompanying tables illustrate trends in enrollment, in the types of educational programs, and in the number of doctor of medicine (MD)–granting medical schools in the US over the past 20 years. The data were obtained from the 2023-2024 Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Annual Medical School Questionnaire-Part II. The questionnaire was sent in March 2024 to the 157 LCME-accredited medical schools with students enrolled in at least 1 year of curriculum.
