A Brisbane charity is refusing to take tents away from homeless people as the council warns it is breaking a law that holds a maximum penalty of more than $8,000. Northwest Community Group president Paul Slater received a letter on Wednesday, informing him his tents violated Brisbane City Council's local laws. "It is an offence for a person to deposit any article on council land without a reasonable excuse,” the letter read.

When the people of Saibai built their first church 150 years ago, they chose the highest point they could see on the island so they could, literally, look up to it. Today, the Holy Trinity Church — the fourth to stand on the same sacred mound and completed almost 90 years ago — is impossible to miss, with its stark white walls and dazzling stained-glass windows. And, elders say, the church, which now stands on the island's foreshore, has never been more important to this community.

Contemporary dance has brought Chris Dyke a long way. It’s given the 33-year-old independence, a creative outlet and a deep artistic connection with those around him. As a shy kid with Down syndrome, Dyke started dance classes in Adelaide when he was 12. This year, he became the first Australian with Down syndrome to direct a mainstage work for a professional dance company.

On the short ferry ride from Townsville to Palm Island, Alec Doomadgee prepared himself for cultural work marking the 20th anniversary of his brother's death. Mr Doomadgee painted himself in ochre and charcoal, tied red cloth around his body and put on a headdress of black cockatoo feathers.
