Brisbane City Council has handed down a high-tax but low-spending budget while accusing the state and federal governments of "cost shifting" onto local councils. The council will hike general rates by 3.87 per cent in 2025/26, despite Brisbane's annual inflation figures falling to 2.7 per cent in March this year. It comes as the council released its "financially responsible" annual plan and budget for the financial year on Wednesday morning.

A court has blocked a planned peak hour protest to shut down Brisbane's Story Bridge. Organisers had planned to blockade all six lanes from 8am on Friday, calling for the Brisbane City Council to dedicate one lane to cyclists and pedestrians. In his ruling, the magistrate said the protest would "compromise people's safety". "The balance here is the people who will be disrupted coming into town to work, the other issue is safety," the magistrate said.
