In a decision addressing the application of the standard ofreview on internal administrative appeals, WeirFoulds Partners BenKates and Amy Block secured a favourable result for the Law Societyof Ontario (LSO) in Law Society of Ontario v. McLellan, 2024 ONSC7204. The December 2024 ruling by the Divisional Courtaddressed the deference owing to the trier of fact in professionallicensing decisions dealing with the good character of legalprofessionals.

The Law Society of Ontario has successfully secured a stay related to the licensing application of a man who admitted to sexually abusing children in 2009, temporarily blocking his ability to be licensed to practise law, as recently reported by the Toronto Star. The stay effectively halts AA's ability to be called to the bar and practise law while the appeal process continues.

Body The 12.5 million people enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid as of 2020 are one of the country’s most vulnerable populations. Known as “dual enrollees,” these people tend to have worse health, including more chronic conditions that require more intensive and costly care than other Medicare enrollees. As of 2020, nearly all dual enrollees have incomes below $20,000 a year (87 percent), and they are disproportionately people of color (49 percent).

Parallel proceedings such as these are not infrequent, given that, in professional regulation, criminal charges trigger a duty to report by a registrant and may, ultimately, also give rise to allegations of professional misconduct.
