I start with an admission. I used to quite like Kanye West. His music provided part of the soundtrack to my teenage years. I even went to see him perform live once. It did not take long in the end – just 78 minutes, in fact. That was all the time that was needed for Rachel Reeves, delivering the Budget last week, to tear up a plethora of promises that she and her party had made over the course of several years. One by one they fell. Having vowed not to “fiddle” her fiscal rules “to get different results”, she did precisely that. After pledging not to increase national insurance, she did.

It’s actually even worse than this: if your *personal* income is under £35,000 but your partner has an income of, say, £1 million a year, your household - including the person earning £1 million a year - will still get Winter Fuel Allowance from the taxpayer. What an absolutely

If you're a pension-age couple with a combined income of just under £70,000 a year, the government will give you taxpayers' money to pay your energy bills with. If you're a family earning a fraction of that amount and struggling to keep your children warm this winter, no help

Young person working all hours God sends just to cover the rent, while paying record levels of tax? Want to ever have a hope of buying a house? Work harder. Over-65 enjoying the benefits of your private pension/dividends/property rent on your latest Mediterranean cruise? Great,
