EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — About 2,600 Rhode Islanders who didn’t file federal tax returns in 2020 are still eligible to claim refunds and Economic Impact Payments, according to U.S. Senator Jack Reed. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said nearly $1 billion in refunds and rebates from the 2020 tax season are still unclaimed, with an estimated $2.98 million of those funds owed to Rhode Islanders.
New Bedford launches EMT training course

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Anyone interested in a career in emergency medical services (EMS) can now register for a new program in New Bedford. The New Bedford EMT Training Academy offers 180 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction to prepare students for their state certification test and a “rewarding, in-demand career,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said in a press release. The academy covers a “wide range of subjects,” according to the city, including first aid, EMS operations, anatomy and physiology.

Police seize cocaine, revolver from New Bedford apartment

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — After making a “historic” cocaine bust this week, New Bedford police announced another drug arrest on Friday. Police said they executed a search warrant at a North Street apartment as part of an investigation into an alleged cocaine delivery service. The search led to the seizure of 345 grams of cocaine, drug packaging materials, a revolver and ammunition, according to police, as well as the arrest of 40-year-old Brandon Delgado.
Officials: New Bedford fire likely caused by ‘oil-soaked rags’

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford firefighters knocked down a porch fire that broke out early Wednesday morning on Clark Street. The fire started around 4 a.m. and crews were able to keep it from spreading further into the single-family home, the department wrote in a Facebook post. Investigators determined the fire was accidental and likely caused by “oil-soaked rags from renovations placed in a garbage bag” on the porch, according to the department. No injuries were reported.
MLK Community Center food pantry now open 5 days a week

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The food pantry at the MLK Community Center in Newport has updated its hours and will now be open every weekday. The nonprofit provides food and support to at-risk residents of Newport County. The pantry’s new hours are as follows:Monday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.Tuesday: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.Thursday: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.Friday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.The center noted that it’s only open to people who live in Newport County.
