NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - The annual Newport Jazz Festival has announced its 2025 lineup. Singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe, hip hop band The Roots, and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier top the list of performers, which also includes R&B singer Jorja Smith, bassist Esperanza Spalding, and legendary hip hop group De La Soul. Jazz fans can look forward to seeing vocalists Cécile McLorin Salvant and Dianne Reeves, as well as the Emmet Cohen Trio.

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) - Steven Ortiz is now a free man. The Boston Globe first reported on Friday that Bristol County prosecutors dismissed the case against Ortiz, who was indicted back in 2017 on charges of heroin trafficking, possession with intent to distribute, and larceny exceeding $250.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - The prosecution is expected to call more witnesses on Thursday as the trial of former North Kingstown coach Aaron Thomas continues. Thomas, who coached boys' basketball at North Kingstown High School for nearly 30 years, is on trial for second-degree child molestation and second-degree sexual assault. The trial started with jury selection on April 1, and witness testimony began on Monday.

President Crystal Williams said RISD's Office of International Students and Scholar Affairs (ISSA) learned that the student's international status had been changed to "terminated" during a routine review of student records.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has fired all of the workers in its program that seeks to help low-income Americans pay their energy bills. Everyone who had been working on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) was let go on Tuesday, according to now-former employee Andrew Germain. "Every single federal staff member that worked on LIHEAP was let go, so there are no federal staff members left to work on the program," Germain told The Hill.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence Mayor Brett Smiley joined 12 News at 4 on Wednesday to discuss the capital city's upcoming budget proposal and more. Smiley told 12 News anchor Kim Kalunian that balancing this year's budget is particularly tricky due to a settlement that requires the city to pay Providence Public Schools upward of $10 million. The mayor said that money will come from a combination of new property taxes, revenue fines and fees, and cuts on the part of the city.
