Drivers may notice something new on their daily commute around Niagara County on the state right of ways: license plate readers. While not overly large – just a pole with a small solar panel on it and a small camera – these newly installed devices will be running the license plates of passersby in the hope of catching criminals before they can do any more harm. “This is a project that’s been going on for a couple years,” Sheriff Michael Filicetti said.

Different proposals will steer whether or not the Town of Wheatfield uses a $500,000 bond to pay for garbage totes in the municipality for its new garbage contract. Bids for a new garbage contract are not set to be opened until May 19. Still, town officials, at a regular business meeting Monday, voted on whether or not to authorize Supervisor Don MacSwan to bond the money. The resolution was unanimously supported. MacSwan characterized the move as a way to move quickly once the bids are opened.
