PHILADELPHIA – In the year since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, terrorist attack, Israeli forces have killed an estimated 41,200 Palestinians, including 16,700 children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. But a recent letter in The Lancet puts the true death toll in Gaza much higher, at more than 186,000, when counting those killed as an indirect result of the conflict. Severe food shortages are certainly a contributing factor.

Yesterday, I interviewed a refugee Ukrainian family in transition from their homeland looking for a permanent place to settle. They were being visited by evangelical church friends. Since I was teaching a course on current world conflicts, the conversation turned to Palestine/Israel where a number of references were made to Babylon and Jeremiah.

In the early hours of Monday Israeli forces targeted the tents of displaced Gazans on the premises of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah city in central Gaza. An explosion from the airstrike set the compound on fire that burned down more than 50 tents. Initial reports state that at least four were killed and 70 wounded, including women and children, in the surprise attack.

Soldiers saw the body parts of little children, heard the screams, the cries, and groans of the dying, smelled the stench of rotting corpses being eaten by stray dogs, and saw their victims—mothers and fathers—begging in vain for help to save their dismembered children. Israeli soldiers, like soldiers in other countries, bask in the self-serving effusive praise showered upon them by politicians, but privately they know BS when they hear it.

What will it take to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza? That’s the question confounding people of conscience all over the world since last October. After Israeli citizens, tax-paying residents of the United States have the most leverage over the perpetrators of genocide given that the U.S. is Israel’s biggest weapons supplier. What if our taxes were spent on the things we need rather than on the deadly weapons Israel is thirsting for?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is neither a great orator, nor did his speech before a joint Congressional session on July 24 have actual worth. It was an expression of his desperation, if not defeat, on all fronts. This is not new. For years, Netanyahu has served the role of a social media meme.

The Right to Food Campaign is appalled by the merciless use of starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza by the Israel government. We are equally dismayed by the Indian government’s continued complicity with this and related war crimes in Gaza. During the last nine months, tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians including countless children have been blown to pieces, buried under the rubble, charred to death or grievously wounded.

The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Wednesday that polio had been detected in Gaza and warned that urgent preventive measures had to be taken to protect children from the infection, which can cause death or crippling paralysis. “The detection of polio in Gaza is another reminder of the dire conditions the population is facing,” the WHO director wrote on X, referring to the Israeli military onslaught on the Palestinian enclave.
