Background: On October 30th, a tragic incident occurred when eight women of Mandipanka village of Kandhamal district consumed gruel made from mango kernels, resulting in severe illness. While being transported to the hospital by villagers, two women succumbed on the way. The remaining six were admitted to the Medical College in Berhampur, where two of them became critically ill and were subsequently transferred to SCB Medical College in Cuttack.

Highlighting the extent of malnutrition and food insecurity, the report reveals some shocking statistics. Particularly, the estimated 200 million malnourished population in India is almost equivalent to the entire population of Brazil and constitutes about 14% of India’s total population.

October 16th is celebrated as World Food Day, marking the foundation of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. The theme for this year is ‘Right to Food for a Better Life anda Better Future’. This is an occasion for us to review the status of the right to food in India and consider ways in which the right to food for all can be ensured. India once again ranks poorly in the Global Hunger Index, at 105 among 127 countries and falls under the ‘serious’ category.

An Oxfam report published Wednesday estimates that war-fueled hunger is likely killing as many as 21,000 people per day in dozens of countries as parties to global conflicts weaponize starvation against children and other vulnerable people in Gaza, Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, and elsewhere.
