Fiji Airways — the flag carrier for the South Pacific island of Fiji — recently announced new, nonstop flights between Nadi and Dallas/Ft. Worth. Flights are expected to begin on December 10 and will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The carrier plans to utilize one of its Airbus A350-900XWB on this 13-hour service.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and the movement towards exercising net-zero carbon emissions for daily operations by 2050 is a prominent goal of several major airlines around the globe. The European Union (EU) requires a two percent blend of SAF from 2025 and a 70 percent blend by 2050.

Recently, the union representing roughly 28,000 flight attendants at American announced that the airline failed to reach an agreement after intensive contract negotiations and that as a result, members should prepare for strike action when given permission. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and American had two weeks of mediation with the National Mediation Board (NMB) in Washington, D.C. The sessions were followed by three weeks of discussions in Dallas.

The second-largest airline in Canada sent a 72-hour lockout notification to the union representing its aircraft maintenance staff. On Saturday, WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notification to the union that represents the airline’s aircraft maintenance engineers. Unless the Aircraft Maintenance Fraternal Association (AMFA) can reach a deal and agreement with the carrier, a work stoppage could happen as early as Tuesday, May 7 at noon, according to the airline.

The Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) Local 556 at Southwest ratified a new four-year contract after its flight attendants voted in favor of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). As a result, the Dallas-based carrier is the first major airline in the U.S. to ink a new, enhanced contract with its flight attendants.
