Australian businesses are showing resilience in the face of a slowing economy, managing to offset declining turnover by reducing their costs, according to Westpac Business Bank’s latest quarterly snapshot. The report, which draws on the Group’s proprietary data from commercial and SME customers, showed that while turnover fell by 3 per cent in the December quarter, expenses dropped by 4 per cent to their lowest level since the March quarter of 2022.

The Reserve Bank of Australia lifted the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.35 per cent at its November Board meeting in response to persistent inflationary pressures. Inflation is still too high – the RBA is trying to get it down below 3 per cent by the middle of 2025, but it’s finding it harder to get there than it expected. And when the Board sees inflation not cooling as quickly as they’d hoped, they are responding to that.

The survey pointed to limited impact from the RBA’s decision to pause. Responses showed no improvement over the course of survey week. In fact, sentiment declined by 4.9 per cent between those surveyed prior to the RBA decision and those surveyed after. The weakness can be partly explained by doubts about how long this rate pause will last. Westpac economists see this as the end of the tightening cycle, but consumers are less convinced.
