Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board members Friday approved a $97,600 contract for design work for a new permanent farmers market pavilion – a key step that could allow the structure to be built next spring when the city upgrades the market parking lot. Over 30 vendors signed a letter of support for the long-discussed pavilion, which is one of three major projects – along with Rotary Square and riverwalk improvements – the DDA hopes to tackle with remaining TIF 97 funds.

As the morning commute rushed by on May 7, streams of yellow caution tape outlined the woods off West Eleventh Street and Division in Traverse City. After years of debate over how to respond to the growing number of unhoused people living in those woods in an encampment nicknamed “The Pines,” officials were enforcing a no-camping ordinance. Residents of The Pines, which less than two years ago sheltered a quarter of the county’s unhoused population, were told they had to leave.

A 47-year-old Lewiston man died early Sunday after trying to cross US-31 on foot between Three and Four Mile roads and getting struck by a car. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, and East Bay Fire and EMS responded to the crash in East Bay Township just after midnight. According to the Sheriff's Office, the Lewiston man was attempting to walk across US-31 and was hit by an eastbound vehicle operated by a 33-year-old Traverse City man.
