    Police say an armed suspect prompted evacuations from Northwest Portland businesses on Monday evening, and people in the area of Northwest 21st Avenue and Irving Street were being told to shelter in their homes. Events unfolded around 6 p.m. when police said they spotted a person who had an arrest warrant. “The suspect immediately used pepper spray on the officers and lunged at them with a knife before running off,” police said.

    Dan Handelman, a longtime police accountability advocate in Portland whose encyclopedic knowledge of officer misconduct and exacting commitment to accountability, died Wednesday at the age of 60. Jason Renaud, a mental health advocate who was a close friend of the exceedingly private activist, confirmed the news. Handelman had spent the past week in a local hospital’s intensive care unit after he suffered a stroke, according to Renaud. “Dan was a brave steward of police reform,” Renaud said.

    A departing Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Las Vegas returned to the airport Wednesday morning due to a “strong odor” on board after takeoff, the airline said. Flight 757 landed safely and firefighters met the plane back at Portland International Airport, a spokesperson for the Port of Portland said. Nine people asked for medical evaluations, spokesperson Allison Ferré said. The plane was removed from service and passengers were booked on another plane, the airline said.
