A 41-year-old man accused of steering into a motorcyclist last week before speeding off on U.S. 26 was indicted Monday on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault, unlawful use of weapon and failure to perform the duties of a driver. The man, Samir Helio Pazzoto-Filho, appeared in Washington County Circuit Court and pleaded not guilty. His court-appointed attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Police are asking for the public’s help to find a woman or girl last seen entering a white van in the 800 block of Southeast 162nd Avenue around 10 a.m. Police said the woman or girl, who wasn’t named, may have been abducted. Police said the van approached her as she walked down the street. A person then got out of the van and ushered her into it before driving off. Police said the van was last seen at 10:01 a.m. driving north on Northeast 162nd Avenue from Glisan Street.

Portland police identified the 49-year-old man killed in a Sunday morning shooting in Old Town as 49-year-old Froilan Ortiz. Officers found Ortiz around 7 a.m. in an isolated side street near the Steel Bridge and Northwest Naito Parkway. The shooting was the third homicide near the Steel Bridge since the beginning of 2024. The suspect or suspects fled, and officers have announced no arrests.

The city agreed last week to pay $375,000 to settle a civil lawsuit by a Portland woman injured in a 2020 protest when a police officer fired a crowd control munition at her feet. The suit, filed in April 2022 in U.S. District Court of Oregon, said that Meghan Opbroek attended a protest at police’s North Precinct on June 26, 2020, in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd. Officers told the crowd around 1 a.m. that they had declared the gathering an unlawful assembly.

A fatal Sunday morning shooting in Portland’s Old Town neighborhood took place in an isolated side street next to the Steel Bridge, witnesses and police say. The shooting was the third homicide near the Steel Bridge since the beginning of 2024. Police have not publicly identified the victim or released many details on the latest killing. But a man living in a nearby encampment, who declined to give his name due to fear of retaliation, said the gunman fired more than a dozen shots.
