Authorities are asking some residents to evacuate after a brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon near Mosier. The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office issued a Level 3 “Go Now!” evacuation order about 5 p.m. for the area of Cherry Hill Drive and Kingdom Street in Mosier. The brush fire was reported an hour earlier near the Columbia River Gorge town about 60 miles east of Portland, according to the sheriff’s office. Fire officials said the blaze was about 2.5 acres.

Bob Cozzie, the longtime director of Portland’s 911 system, will become the city’s top official overseeing police, fire and emergency communications next month, officials announced Wednesday. Cozzie, 59, will replace Mike Myers as interim deputy city administrator for public safety beginning June 16.

A Roosevelt High School senior was killed and two other students injured after their car was hit by a driver going the wrong way on State Route 14 in Camas late Monday, Washington authorities said. Michael O’Brien, 18, was driving in the westbound lanes of the road near mile post 14 when a driver struck the car head-on. Washington State Patrol said O’Brien died at the scene. Two passengers, 18-year-old Jack Craig and 17-year-old Will Rinehart, were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.

Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp said in a statement Thursday he plans to retire from his post “in the coming months.” The announcement came just hours after a state police policy committee recommended permanently stripping him of his police certification. Van der Kamp’s decision arrives amid increasing scrutiny of his truthfulness.

A state police policy committee Thursday voted unanimously to recommend that Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp lose his police certification for life. The recommendation comes weeks after Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels placed van der Kamp on a Brady list of officers with questionable credibility and the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training found him in violation of moral fitness rules because he concealed his firing from a California police department.
