In August, Alejandro Curiel was charged with domestic abuse assault in connection with an altercation reported at his home. He also faced several counts of violating a no contact order.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — A domestic violence suspect is recovering after Ottumwa investigators say he fired a gun at a woman before turning it on himself. The incident was reported outside a mini storage facility on South Iowa Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the man was involved in a domestic dispute with a woman when he displayed a gun and fired a shot at the woman. She escaped the scene unharmed.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — An August trial date for an Ottumwa man charged in the July 2021 death of his wife has been moved to next month. Gregory Showalter Sr., 63, is accused of murdering 60-year-old Helen Showalter and dumping her body in the Des Moines River. He was initially scheduled to stand trial Aug. 15, 2023 on charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, willful injury and domestic abuse. Showalter is now scheduled to face a jury Sept. 12, 2023. A pretrial conference is set for Sept. 5, 2023.

A memo regarding the resignation of Dillon McPherson shows McPherson also engaged in sexual activity while on duty. Documents go on to allege that their supervisor, Bill Keith, a former captain with the department, was terminated for failing to adequately lead those under his command.
