It’s a day much like the other 160 school days of this term, yet it has a different dimension. Today marks the last day for the five schoolchildren to go off to school. I savored the quiet days to be rejuvenated yet I’m also eager to having the children at home every day.

The annual “Walk for Nohema” in honor of former FHS Spanish teacher Nohema Graber will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 10 at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield. The event will feature about 17-18 baskets for a silent auction, and bidding on the auction will end at 11:45 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

FAIRFIELD – Maasdam Barns in Fairfield will host another installment of its popular “Babies at the Barns” this weekend. The event is just the first in a series of special and free events the barns will hold once a month now through October. Babies at the Barns gives the public a chance to see and pet baby animals.

FAIRFIELD – Fairfield Youth Performing Arts is putting on the musical “Mary Poppins Jr.” this summer, and auditions are this weekend. Auditions will be held at Golden Magnolia Sanctuary (former First Presbyterian Church) at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9 and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. Local youth can pick one day or the other to try out.

FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery Board has been making progress on its campaign to create an endowment fund, and using the money raised to right headstones. The cemetery has a number of headstones that have fallen over, and fixing them is a lot of work because it involves removing their old foundations and pouring a new one 4 feet deep.
