13News Now is partnering with Mid-Atlantic STIHL, Thompson Creek Windows, and First Team Auto to give back to the thousands of people in our region who choose to serve and protect our freedoms by joining the military.
These men and women and their families go through more than we can begin to understand while in and out of service.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Bird opened in Norfolk with the idea of being for anyone. "Some craft cocktail bars can be a little gate-keepy, and brunch spots can be packed and expensive," said co-owner Daniel Worrell. The idea behind the spot was the familiar phrase: the early bird gets the worm. Here, you can start your day with a great brunch. Worrell said he and his business partners wanted to create a welcoming spot that people would want to come to.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Editor's note: This story is a part of our "Friday Flavor" series. April Burke works at The Hunt Room inside the Cavalier Resort. "I love my job," she smiled. She is the kitchen supervisor, which means she's in charge of creating the soup of the day. "When you do soup of the day, you're using scraps of things that you haven't used yet, and you need to get rid of things, so you get to be creative with things," Burke said.
So, she got to work on her creativity.

Now, you can find Mello Beans in Foodies - The Local's Market in Virginia Beach. Owner and Executive Chef at Foodies, Patrick McBrayer, said this spot is all about supporting locals.
"We're trying to get down to how you're supposed to eat from farm to table," he said.

NORFOLK, Va. — Eric Nelson said he opened Crudo Nudo to bring unique dishes to Norfolk. "It's part of my life, so it's not really a job," Nelson said. You may have driven by the restaurant on 21st Street and not noticed. "People are like, I've driven by that for four years and never come in and it's like, why not," Nelson laughed.
This place is worth a stop. "Crudo is Spanish for raw and so we do a lot of fresh raw seafood," Nelson smiled. They also make their pasta in-house.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Brenda Harford was an educator for nearly 30 years when she decided to shift careers and become a full-time baker. She opened Whole-ly Rollers Bakery with her faith in mind: a Christian-based bakery with a play on the name. "People said it was so good it will make you want to shout, and I said, 'Huh. We did a lot of shouting in our old Baptist church,'" Harford laughed.

HAMPTON, Va. — "I knew I wanted to be an artist, but I didn't see a path." Dathan Kane knew from a young age that he wanted to be an artist. Even so, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would give the normal answers: doctor, lawyer, etc. However, he just couldn't stay away from art. Art is Kane's calling.
"I told myself years ago, I really want to take this seriously," said Kane smiling and looking around a garage covered in his art. Kane followed his passion and went to college.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Amy Markman had no intentions of opening a business. She was simply delivering soup to her friends. Things changed, she said, when she started posting online and people started calling. "They were like, 'Oh my gosh, can we buy it? How do we buy it?' And I was like, 'Well, I don't sell it.' And really, that's how Soup Love was born."
Now, Soup Love is led by women out of a small kitchen in Virginia Beach.
