Creative Australia's shock decision to drop its own selection to one of the world's most prestigious cultural events, the Venice Biennale, has been met with severe backlash including a spate of resignations. Artists and cultural leaders have strongly criticised Creative Australia, the federal government's arts funding and advisory body, for rescinding its 2026 Biennale invitation to Lebanese Australian artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino.

American filmmaker, writer and artist David Lynch — who has died, aged 78 — was truly one of a kind. With a career spanning six decades, his dark, subversive visions earned him a dedicated cult following and he was held in high esteem by critics. His influence was so far-reaching that the term 'Lynchian' was commonly attributed to anything that loosely resembled his distinctive mood and aesthetic. However, though deeply inspirational, his style was impossible to imitate.

Lush ferns unfurl on a sky-blue wall. Thick white paint trickles along like water. Green moss dots a rock. We are in the verdant Yarra Valley on Wurundjeri country in Victoria watching artist Georgia Szmerling layer acrylic paint into a mural on the walls of the TarraWarra Museum of Art. The work is inspired by a recent walk at the nearby Badgers Creek. Walking for inspiration is a regular practice for Szmerling.
