COLORADO SPRINGS — Gravel bike racing is a new addition to the Pikes Peak APEX off-road bicycle race series. “It's sort of a mix between road, pure road and mountain bike,” said APEX Racer, Oliver Rutberg. “Gravel cycling. Is the new big jam,” said APEX Course Director, Daniel MathenyCourse Director. A gravel bike has drop handlebars like a road bike and then more rugged tires and suspension similar to a mountain bike.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Alex Snider, a 16-year-old mountain bike racer from Colorado Springs, is excited and at the same time, humbled as he joins the Pro division of the Pikes Peak APEX. For those who don't know, the Pikes Peak APEX is a multi-day mountain bike challenge on the slopes of Pikes Peak. "I'm trying to step it up to more national level races, international level races, and APEX is a great opportunity to do stuff like that," Snider said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) — The road washout in North Cheyenne Cañon Park is forcing organizers of the Pikes Peak APEX cycling race to consider alternate course routes. “Both the gravel race and the third stage of the mountain bike race do ride up North Cheyenne Cañon Road, up on the pavement,” said Pike Peak APEX Director, Micah Rice. Safety is priority, even though the problem spot is a very small segment of the course.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) — A three-day test of athleticism and cycling skill happens this week in Southern Colorado with the Pikes Peak APEX. It is three days of off-road bicycle racing at three locations, and this year on day three, there are two courses in Colorado Springs starting at North Cheyenne Canon Park. “New for 2025, we have a gravel race, a gravel cycling option,” said Pikes Peak APEX, Executive Director Micah Rice.
