A site-specific bylaw being proposed at regional council next week aims to empty the homeless encampment at 100 Victoria St. N. by December, so development of the Kitchener Central Transit Hub can begin next year. Waterloo Region’s administration and finance committee narrowly passed a motion this week to try to help Cambridge’s outgoing fashion history museum stay on display locally after the city decided to terminate its lease of the Old Hespeler post office. “I think a lot of what I’ve heard, I don’t accept in a number of ways,” said Coun. Public health received 1,061 consumer complaints concerning food premises last year — a 21.6 per cent increase compared to the 872 it received in 2023. Inspectors enacted 116 enforcement actions (up from 48 in 2023), including 18 closure orders, two non-closure orders and 96 tickets, says a report to the region’s community and health services committee. The increase in enforcement is partly attributed to population growth and an increase in the number of food purveyors.

Making the region’s automated speed enforcement program practical and palatable for motorists in its townships might take some tweaking. “I think we need to inspire compliance, not defiance,” said Cambridge Coun. Pam Wolf, who has questioned the rationale behind having the cameras operational in school zones on a 24-7 basis at all times of the year, even in areas of her city.

A development proposal to add 677 residential units off Nafziger Road in Wilmot Township is still too dense, some say. Cachet Developments’ revised plan of subdivision on farmland south of Waterloo Street is better than the one with a “six-storey snow fence” proposed back in 2021, said local resident Barry Wolfe. “It’s my opinion that this second proposal is a much-improved version,” Wolfe told council Monday evening.

Grand River Transit’s business plan for the next decade looks to add new and expanded routes, 625,000 service hours and 381 more transit operators. The plan introduced by transportation staff Thursday predicts ridership will grow by almost seven million, to 32.5 million in 2034, when GRT will deliver more than 1.6 million service hours annually — comparable to larger transit agencies in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton area.
