NEW YORK -- It looked like Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante was in for a short night on Thursday against the Mets at Citi Field. After two innings, he had allowed four runs and thrown 39 pitches. However, Pallante made adjustments and went deep into the game. But the Cardinals’ offense was stifled in a 4-1 loss to New York. Pallante’s worst inning turned out to be the second, when the Mets scored their four runs. Mark Vientos, a .145 hitter entering the day, was able to get his groove back.

NEW YORK -- Just as they did in their first two games against the Yankees, the Royals struggled to score runs and ended up losing Wednesday’s matchup, 4-3, at Yankee Stadium. Besides getting swept in the three-game series, the Royals are tied for 27th in the Major Leagues in runs scored (58) and have scored four runs or fewer in 17 of 19 games, which is last in the Majors. Kansas City is 6-11 when scoring four runs or fewer. Making matters worse is the Royals' inability to notch clutch hits.

Wacha (0-3, 4.35 ERA) was on his way to having his best start of the season. After five scoreless innings, he had allowed only three singles while protecting a two-run lead.
