    The former Hickory Daily Record building sold in May to a Winston-Salem-based group. The newspaper is moving to a new office in Hickory. The 75,000-square-foot building, located at 1100 11th Ave. Blvd. SE off Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard, was sold to Conwest Holdings LLC on May 12 for $1,937,500, according to Catawba County real estate records. The registered agent for Conwest Holdings is Joe Joseph, Jr., a Hickory native.

    The town of Brookford’s police chief is on paid administrative leave following an indictment on one felony charge and one misdemeanor charge related to his work at the department. Willie Duran Armstrong, 26, of Hickory, was indicted on charges of felony altering, destroying or stealing criminal evidence and misdemeanor willfully failing to discharge duties, according to documents filed at the Catawba County Courthouse. A grand jury indicted Armstrong on the charges Monday.

    Burke County saw a slight drop in its unemployment rate in March, remaining below the national jobless rate. The county’s unemployment rate was 3.8% in March, down from 4% in February. It was slightly higher than the state rate of 3.7% but still below the national rate of 4.2%, according to North Carolina Department of Commerce figures. With a 3.8% unemployment rate and 40,098 people in the workforce, 1,514 people are unemployed but actively looking for a job.
