Melbourne commuters can expect headaches for the rest of the year as the $15bn Metro Tunnel opens in stages. Passengers on three different train lines will have to switch at either of two different stations as the first trains carrying passengers through the new tunnel are opened to the public. Supermarkets should be banned from selling cigarettes, the Lung Foundation of Australia says. The foundation has floated the ban as a means to stop smokers being tempted to buy a pack or a pouch alongside their groceries. “We need everyone from government to big corporations to put the lung health of Australians ahead of profits from a product that kills 66 Australians daily,” foundation chief executive Mark Brooke said.

Hail pounded parts of Sydney and regional NSW across Tuesday. Large storms across coastal areas of the state sparked warnings for flash flooding, damaging wind and large hailstones from the Bureau of Meteorology. The warnings apply to people in the Hunter, metro, Southern Tablelands, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and South West Slopes regions. Video posted from western Sydney on Tuesday afternoon shows a heavy dumping of small hailstones.
