Some names in college football — like Arch Manning, DJ Lagway and Julian Sayin — already feel destined for the spotlight. And rest assured: quarterbacks will get plenty of attention in the months ahead. But today, we're turning the pen elsewhere. The 2025 season is rich with breakout potential across the board. From freak athletes on defense to skill players ready to take over game plans, this fall offers a chance for emerging stars to reshape the national conversation (no arm talent required).

An exciting first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books. It featured plenty of surprise, including one right off the bat with the Jaguars trading away next year's first round pick to Cleveland for the rights to draft Travis Hunter. The way the board broke this year, with just two quarterbacks going in the first round (Cam Ward and Shedeur Jaxson Dart) and Shedeur Sanders falling into the second day, I think 2026 will call for a reversal.

With about one week to go until the 2025 NFL Draft, the buzz is growing louder around certain prospects. Some of it makes perfect sense; some of it doesn't. Every year, a few players ride measurables and potential into inflated draft-day stock, while others with quality tape and high floors get overlooked. Here's a look at a few guys I'm lower on than consensus -- and a few I think deserve a lot more love. All rankings via CBSSports.com's consensus prospect rankings.

Spring football continues to feel different around college football — and I remember writing that this time last year — but, boy, this has really been different. We've got high-profile standoffs between star quarterbacks and their SEC programs, we've got the near-total elimination of spring football games as we knew them, we've got teams rushing to spend crazy amounts of money now before an expected House v. NCAA settlement goes into effect, and we've even got Bill Belichick wearing Carolina blue.

Shemar Stewart may not have had prolific sack production as a Texas A&M pass rusher, mustering just 1.5 sacks in each of his three college football seasons. The defensive lineman has already made history as an NFL draft prospect, however, thanks to some eye-popping measurables. Stewart, 21, became just the fourth defensive lineman to ever weigh more than 260 pounds and log at least 40 inches in the vertical jump at the scouting combine this week, according to NFL Research.
