The Taos Special Olympics, the town’s first responders and local volunteers ran the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run on Wednesday (May 28), starting at Taos Plaza and ending at DeVargas Funeral Home. For Taos athletes and supporters, it signified the opening of the Special Olympics’ state games. The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon created the event.

The two-sport athlete who ran track for head coach Benny Mitchell made history when she signed her letter of intent to play hockey for the University of New Mexico’s first women’s hockey team. The senior played hockey for the Albuquerque Ice Wolves due to the August fire at the Taos Youth and Family Center and finished her last season for the track team.
